Body Shop Equipment & Tools

While there are multiple tools and equipment needed in automotive body repair shops, there are certain essentials that it would be difficult, if not impossible, to operate without. To complete the job properly, and in a timely manner, body repairmen and painters need to use several different tools on a daily basis.

Air Compressor

An air compressor is used to operate tools since electric tools are banned in most cities as fire hazards. Air must be used to operate all air tools such as air ratchets, air drills, impact wrenches and spray equipment. Without an air compressor, workers cannot operate their needed equipment to complete a repair job.

Welder

A welder is used to complete a majority of auto body repairs for panel replacements. To replace a damaged section of the vehicle such as a quarter panel, rocker panel or roof skin, a welder is essential. It is the tool used to weld the metal panel back to the automobile.

Frame Rack

A frame rack is a universal tie-down system for making various pulls and corrections to damaged areas on a vehicle. For example, after a collision, the automobile frame can be bent beyond hand repair. The frame rack machine is used to bolt the vehicle down and reverse the damage by pulling the vehicle back into its proper position.

Dual Action Sander

The D.A. sander is the main tool for removing chips or scratches on the body panel and feather-edging to blend body filler. It increases production time by more than half as opposed to wet or dry sanding by hand. It is hooked to the air compressor by way of an air hose and uses sandpaper to clean the panel.

Automotive Paint Gun

An automotive paint gun is used after all of the body work has been completed. The next step is painting which must be done with a quality paint gun designed for automotive work. The gun, which is connected to the air compressor by an air hose, can be set to paint large or small areas depending on air pressure or pattern control. It is one of the most essential tools for a clean, finished product.
