The Volkswagen Beetle's tie rod, like most other vehicle suspensions, is connected to the steering knuckles of both front wheels. It is highly unlikely that you'll need to replace the main tie rod itself, and doing so often requires professional help. It is possible, however, to replace the tie rod ends at either of the wheels. It is a good idea to install new tie rod ends at both wheels to maintain a proper balance on the suspension.

Instructions

    1

Raise the Beetle's front end onto jack stands using the floor jack. Make sure the parking brake is applied and remove the front wheel.

    2

Hold the main rod in position with an open-ended wrench and break the jam nut on the tie-rod end loose with a larger wrench. Don't back off the nut any further after loosening it, as this will mark the tie-rod end's installation point.

    3

Loosen the nut on the tie rod's ball stud with your wrench, then install a puller on the ball stud and disconnect the ball stud from the steering knuckle.

    4

Unscrew the tie rod end from the rod.

    5

Screw the replacement tie rod end in place until it reaches the jam nut.

    6

Connect the tie rod end to the steering knuckle at the tie rod ball stud using a new ball stud nut and your wrench, then tighten the jam nut at the other side of the tie rod end.

    7

Reconnect the wheel and lower the Beetle off the jack stands.
