Hyundai uses a distributorless ignition system (DIS) in all its engines, with the exception of the 3.0L (VIN T) V6 engine. In a distributorless ignition system, the ignition coil pack mounts to the engine. With a distributor system, like the one on the 3.0L, V6 engine, the distributor houses the Sonata ignition coil.

Instructions

    1

Use safety precautions to prevent injuries. While there are several you can perform, the single most important one is to disconnect the negative battery terminal. This prevents accidental sparks, fires and electrocution.

    2

Lift the hood and locate the ignition coil pack. If you have a 3.0L, V6 engine, look for the distributor.

    3

Release the spark plug wires from the ignition coil pack. Pull gently on the boot rather than the wire itself to prevent damage to the wire or connectors. If you have a distributor, you may need to remove the cap, rotor and seal before you can access the Sonata ignition coil.

    4

Remove the ignition coil pack. You may need to unfasten any retainers with a screwdriver or wrench. On a 3.0L, V6 engine you may need to unfasten the mounting bracket to release the Sonata ignition coil.

    5

Install the new ignition coil pack. You want to reassemble the remaining parts by reversing the steps you took to disassemble them.
