How to Replace the Voltage Regulator in a Ford Taurus

The following outlines the procedures for replacing the voltage regulator in Ford Taurus models from 1986 through 1995. Your Ford Taurus will have one of two different voltage regulator types. You will find a rear mounted regulator on the rear of the alternator. If you have a side terminal alternator, you will find the voltage regulator mounted on the right hand fender apron.

Replace a Rear Mounted Regulator

Disconnect the negative battery cable. Use a Torx screwdriver to remove the four retaining screws that attach the voltage regulator to the rear housing of the alternator. Set the screws aside where you won't lose them.

Remove the regulator from the alternator. Make sure the alternator brush and terminal holder remain attached.

Install the new regulator to the rear of the alternator. Secure the regulator to the alternator with the four retaining screws. Tighten them to 20 to 30 inch pounds with a torque wrench. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

Replace the Voltage Regulator for a Side Terminal Alternator

Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the electrical connectors from the wiring harness.

Remove the regulator by unscrewing the mounting screws. Install the new voltage regulator and replace the mounting screws to secure it to the vehicle. Replace the electrical connectors onto the wiring harness.

Reconnect the negative battery cable. Test the system to ensure the voltage regulator is in proper working order.
