The Mitsubishi Galant has an alternator that sends electrical current to various devices in the vehicle while the engine is running. Most alternators made today include a voltage regulator that ensures the voltage level remains constant. You may need to replace the alternator if your battery keeps running down or your headlights become dimmer while driving.

Determine which alternator your Mitsubishi Galant will need. You'll want to be sure the new alternator is compatible with your Galant's engine. Models made from 1969 to 1973 will have a 1.3 L or 1.5 L engine, 1973 to 1975 models have a 1.6 L engine and models made from 1976 to 1983 may have a 1.6 L, 1.85 L, 2.0 L or 2.6 L engine.
2Look at later versions of the Mitsubishi Galant. Models made from 1983 to 1991 have 1.6 L, 1.8 L and 2.0 L engines. 1992 to 1998 versions may have 1.8 L, 2.0 L, 2.4 L and 2.5 L engines. Models for 1999 to 2003 add an option for a 3.0 L engine. The latest generation debuted in 2004 and may have a 2.4 L, 3.8 L or 3.8 L engine.
3Disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench. It may be necessary to remove additional components to gain access to the alternator assembly and this varies by model. This will frequently include the alternator drive belt and California models may require you to remove the rear bank converter assembly.
4Unplug the electrical connections to the alternator and disconnect the mounting bolts on the alternator with a socket wrench.
5Remove the alternator assembly. It may be easier to do this from under the vehicle in some models.
6Install the new alternator assembly and tighten the mounting bolts with a torque wrench to the correct force. This should be in the 14 to 18 foot pound range.
7Plug in the electrical connections to the alternator and replace any additional components that you removed to get to the alternator. Connect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench.
