Removing and replacing a fuel pump located in the fuel tank is a project that you can do yourself, usually after removing the fuel tank from your vehicle. You'll need help to remove and replace the fuel tank from your vehicle, but you can remove and replace the fuel pump without help.

Instructions

    1

Know that in most cases the fuel tank must be off the vehicle and lying on the ground so that you can remove the fuel pump. A few cars have a door in the floor of the vehicle that allows access to the fuel pump, but not many.

    2

Look to see what is holding the fuel pump on. If there is a ring, unscrew it to remove the fuel pump. If the ring is very tight, you may need to use a hammer to hit a flat head screwdriver against the ridges of the ring to dislodge it. If screws are holding on the fuel pump, remove those.

    3

Clean around the fuel pump with a clean rag and remove all dirt and debris. Lift up the fuel pump carefully, while taking care not to knock any dirt, debris or gasket material into the tank. Fuel will drain out of it, so hold it above the hole to allow all of the fuel to drain back into the tank.

    4

Make sure there are no sparks, fire, cigarettes or anything else that could ignite the fuel in the vicinity. You may spill some fuel, and will definitely release fumes into the air, which could catch fire easily.
