The starter on vehicles is what gets the engine started and functioning in order to run properly. It is important to read all instructions carefully before continuing with the project, so you can make sure you have a sense of what you need to do and how you need to do it.

Instructions

    1

Take a moment to look at how the starter, engine lines and brake lines are laid out. This is important to know because you will need to put it back together the same way you took it apart. If you have any questions along the way, consult your vehicle repair manual.

    2

Disconnect the battery starting with the negative terminal first. Locate and unhook the flexible rubber that lines the back of the wheel well. This is done with a bolt being removed from the side of the trunk and one from underneath the vehicle.

    3

Remove the plastic cap that connects the battery and the starter. Unscrew the nut that holds the cable into the starter. Remove the cable. Remove the additional battery connector from the starter. Unscrew the two bolts that hold the starter into the engine. Pull the starter forward and wiggle it a little to get it loose from the engine.

    4

Inspect the new starter to make sure there is no damage and that it looks exactly like the old starter, unless you upgraded to a different starter. The bolt holes and cable connectors should be in the same places. Re-install the new starter using the reverse of the removal directions. Reconnect the battery terminals and start the truck to make sure everything is working properly.
