How to Paint a Fiero

The General Motors Pontiac Fiero is a sports car that came out between 1984-1988. The company made less than 400,000 Fieros, and today the car enjoys something of a cult status. Painting the car yourself requires skill with a spray gun and a suitable place to perform the task.

Instructions

    1

Hire a paint gun and buy enough paint to complete the task. When you go to the auto paint shop, seek advice from the staff so that you know exactly how much paint you are going to need.

    2

Wash the car to make sure that it is free from dust and grime.

    3

Park the car in a suitable clean, dry place. A garage is ideal, but you should cover anything that you can't move out of the way. You should allow a gap of three feet around the car.

    4

Prepare the Fiero for painting by gently sanding the entire car. The effect that you are looking for is to scuff it up a little, not remove the existing paintwork. This process will make the new paint adhere better. You should not use a primer on your Fiero, unless you have paid the extra money and invested in a catalyzed primer. If you try to use a regular one, the new paint will not adhere to the car.

    5

Wipe the car all over with de-greaser to make sure that the car is completely clean.

    6

Cover all wheels, windows and trim using the newspaper and tape.

    7

Mix the paint according to the manufacturer's instructions and fill the paint gun. Tape several pieces of newspaper against a wall and practice your painting motion until you are happy with the process and the pressure.

    8

Apply several thin layers of paint in a sweeping motion allowing each coat to dry before putting on the next one. It is important to apply thin layers so as to avoid the likelihood of runs.

    9

Allow the paint to dry and then apply the top clear coat in the same way.
