The Mitsubishi Galant mixes fuel and air under pressure with a fuel injector. Carburetors previously performed this function passively but were rendered obsolete by fuel injectors in the late 1980s. A fuel injector's programmable firmware allows it to handle different fuels. A fuel injector includes only the nozzle and valve; it still requires the pump to pressurize the fuel.

Instructions

    1

Determine which fuel injector your Mitsubishi Galant will need. This depends not only on the make and model, but also the engine size. Models made from 1969 to 1973 will have a 1.3L or 1.5L engine, 1973 to 1975 models have a 1.6L engine and models made from 1976 to 1983 may have a 1.6L, 1.85L, 2.0L or 2.6L engine.

    2

Look at later versions of the Mitsubishi Galant. Models made from 1983 to 1991 have 1.6L, 1.8L and 2.0L engines. Models manufactured from 1992 to 1998 may have 1.8L, 2.0L, 2.4L and 2.5L engines. Models for 1999 to 2003 add an option for a 3.0L engine. The latest generation debuted in 2004 and may have a 2.4L, 3.8L or 3.8L engine.

    3

Disconnect the negative cable from the battery with a socket wrench and relieve the fuel system pressure. Remove the air cleaner cover and air intake hose assembly.

    4

Disconnect the hose for the positive crankcase ventilation valve with a socket wrench. Detach the electrical connectors for the ignition coil, exhaust gas recirculation valve, fuel injector, throttle position sensor, manifold absolute pressure sensor, evaporative emission purge solenoid, knock sensor and power steering pressure switch.

    5

Remove the rocker cover bracket bolts with a socket wrench. Disconnect the high pressure hose and take out the fuel rail. Remove the fuel injectors from the fuel rail with a socket wrench and discard the old O-rings and gaskets.

    6

Install the new fuel injectors by reversing the removal procedure.

    7

Set the ignition switch to the lock position and connect a scan tool to the data link connector. Turn the ignition switch to ON, select "check mode" from the menu screen and then select "erase memory" from the menu screen. Initialize the learning value, start the engine and check for leaks.
