The Dodge Durango has an anti-lock braking system (ABS) that prevents the brakes from locking during an emergency stop. The ABS controller accomplishes this by reducing the braking force to any wheel that is rotating significantly more slowly than the others. You may need to replace the ABS controller if the ABS warning light comes on. However, it is not necessarily unsafe to drive your vehicle without an ABS.

Instructions

    1

Determine which ABS controller your Dodge Durango will need. You'll want to be sure the new controller is compatible with your make and model of Durango. All versions of the Durango have an ABS.

    2

Disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench and remove the front driver's side wheel. Locate the hydraulic control unit in this wheel well and disconnect the brakes lines with a socket wrench. Remove the hydraulic control unit from the vehicle.

    3

Remove the screws that mount the ABS controller and disconnect the pump's electrical connector from the hydraulic control unit. You will then be able to separate the ABS controller from the hydraulic control unit.

    4

Install the ABS controller onto the hydraulic control unit and use a torque wrench to tighten the mounting screws for the ABS controller to 53 inch lbs. Connect the pump's electrical connector to the ABS controller and install the hydraulic control unit. Torque the mounting nuts for the hydraulic control unit to 11 feet lbs. and the brake lines to 170 inch lbs. Replace the driver's side wheel.

    5

Program the ABS controller with a scan tool according to the instructions in your kit and bleed the ABS. Check for proper ABS operation.
