If the front door on your Toyota Corolla is out of position, it can cause more problems than just opening and closing the door. It also can damage components within the door, along with parts on the car body. Adjusting the position of the car door is a challenging task and requires at least two people to get the job done right.

Instructions

    1

Open the door and position at least two jack stands under the door; place towels on the jack stands to avoid scratching the paint. Another option is having your assistant hold on to the door from the top.

    2

Inspect the condition of the door hinges. If either one is bent or damaged and is the cause of the problem, it needs to be replaced. This needs to be done professionally.

    3

Disconnect the door stop strut from the car. Its bolt has a Phillips-shaped indentation in the top, but it is still best removed with a wrench.

    4

Loosen the bolts connecting the hinge to the door. Slightly lift or lower the door with your assistant's help, depending on the current position of the door and how it needs to be adjusted, then tighten the bolts.

    5

Lower and remove the jack stands from underneath the door. Close the door to test its position. If the door does not close perfectly, repeat the above steps until the door is properly positioned.

    6

Mark around the area surrounding the hinge with a scribe. These markings can be used as a guide if you need to adjust the door's position again or disconnect the door completely.
