How to Replace an Oil Pump in a Jeep Grand Cherokee

Losing lubrication in an engine will destroy it. The oil pump makes sure this doesn't happen by cycling oil through the engine and keeping it lubricated. In most cases, the oil pump lasts the lifetime of a car, but the oil pump in the Jeep Grand Cherokee occasionally may require replacement.

Drive your Jeep Grand Cherokee up onto ramps or lifts. You could also use a jack, but brace the front wheels so they don't roll. Set the emergency break so the car doesn't roll.

Remove the oil pan on the bottom of your engine. Take out the timing chain cover, the timing chains and the tensioners.

Remove the oil pump. Clean the surrounding cables with water and rags.

Replace the old pump. Insert the new model in the same position as the old one, torquing the pump bolts to 21 ft-lb.

Reinsert the tensioners, the timing chains and the timing chain cover. Reattach the oil pan.

Turn the Jeep Grand Cherokee on and check for leaks. Drive your car off the lifts if you don't see any.
