Introduced in 1991, the Ford Explorer is a sports utility vehicle. These vehicles are great to look at especially when they're clean. Keeping the windshield clean is an important factor, so you can see where you're going. Using your windshield washer fluid makes it easier to maintain. However, if you've just filled the reservoir and there isn't any fluid, check for a leak. Fixing it yourself can save you money.
Instructions
- 1
Arrange for a new windshield washer reservoir, before working on your Ford Explorer. This will save you time later, since you won't have to dismantle your SUV twice. The part number depends on the year of your Explorer.
2Park your SUV on a level surface to check for a leak. Turn it off, put on the emergency brake and pull the hood release, which is on the left side of the steering wheel under the instrument panel.
3Get out of your Ford Explorer, go to the front of the SUV and find the auxiliary release. Raise the hood and use the prop rod to keep the hood open.
4Check your windshield washer reservoir for a leak. The reservoir in the Explorer is in the engine compartment near the right edge next to the battery.
5Start by disconnecting the battery's negative cable. Always wait 90 seconds before continuing, if your Ford Explorer is equipped with air bags.
6Locate all the leads to your reservoir and dismantle them, using a screwdriver. This includes undoing the electrical harness plug, hoses and the attaching screws. Then, lift out the windshield washer reservoir and using a small pry tool, release the retaining ring. Use pliers to remove the pump, motor and seal.
7Install the new windshield washer reservoir by first attaching the pump, motor and seal to it. Then, put the retaining ring back in the motor by using a 12-point socket.
8Place the reservoir assembly back into your Ford Explorer and connect the screws, hoses, electrical harness plug and negative battery cable. Make sure you put everything back exactly as you found it to ensure everything works properly and fill the new reservoir with windshield washer fluid.
