The Pontiac Grand Am was originally a popular family sedan, although the latest generations of Grand Am have undergone extensive redesign. The springs in the Pontiac Grand Am are part of a MacPherson strut assembly. Replacing the springs requires the use of an alignment/guiding rod J-34013-27. The Pontiac Grand Am can be serviced by any experienced mechanic.
Instructions
- 1
Raise the vehicle if necessary and secure the wheels with jack stands before removing the strut assembly.
2Secure the strut assembly in the compressor and match up the compressor mounting holes with the Grand Am's strut.
3Compress the spring to half its normal height while taking off the nut from the strut damper shaft. Use the alignment/guiding rod J-34013-27 to guide the damper shaft through the spring cap. Take off the strut assembly components.
4Replace the spring and inspect the strut assembly components for wear. Reassemble the strut by first mounting the strut assembly in the compressor using the bottom locking pin.
5Tighten the strut mount nut to manufacturer's specifications. The front and rear struts receive different foot pounds of pressure.
6Remove the strut assembly from the compressor and reinstall the strut.
7Perform a safety check on the Grand Am before taking it out on the road.
