The Ford Taurus has an electric fuel pump so you should check its fuses and relays and ensure you have fuel before performing the more difficult task of inspecting the fuel pump. Determine which fuel pump your Ford Taurus will need. This depends not only on the make and model, but also the engine size. Models made from 1986 to 1991 have a 2.5 L HSC, 3.0 L Vulcan or 3.8 L engine. The 2.5 L engine was dropped for 1992 to 1995 models and post-1995 models will have a 3.0 L engine.
2Prepare your vehicle for fuel pump servicing. Relieve the fuel system pressure and drain the fuel tank. Disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench.
3Disconnect the fuel lines and remove the fuel pump's electrical connector. You will now be able to remove the fuel tank and fuel pump. Discard the old O-ring seal.
4Install the new fuel pump using the items included in the kit and be sure to replace the O-ring seal. Use caution to avoid damage to the filter, float rod and hoses. Align the fuel pump with the fuel tank retainer and push the fuel pump into the retainer. You will hear a definite click when the two locking tabs on the fuel pump engage.
5Complete the installation by reversing the removal procedure.
6Add at least 10 gallons of gas and start the engine to check for leaks.
