While the setup of the ignition systems in most vehicles is similar, the Pontiac Grand Prix incorporates a direct-mount ignition coil. The main difference, and what makes this setup unique, is that there are no spark plug wires involved in the combustion process.

Instructions

Remove the Old Grand Prix Ignition Coil

    1

Set the emergency, or parking, brake. Detach the ground cable from the negative battery terminal post.

    2

Take off the injector sight shield, also called the engine cosmetic/acoustic shield.

    3

Use a wrench to remove the two mounting nuts. To remove the cover off the mounting studs, lift at the front of the cover.

    4

Grip the boot of the ignition coil module electrical connector and detach it from the Grand Prix ignition coil.

    5

Loosen and remove the fasteners that hold the ignition coil assembly, or ignition cassette, to the mounting system.

    6

Wrap a shop cloth around a screwdriver and pry the Grand Prix ignition coil away from the assembly. Use slow movements and keep the pace even around the ignition coil to prevent tears in the perimeter seal.

    7

Twist the ignition coil to break the seal between the spark plug and the ignition coil. To remove the boot, use the GMC recommended tool, a J 43094 Spark Plug Boot Removal Tool.

Reassemble the Engine Components

    8

Replace any components that look worn or damaged.

    9

Clean all the surfaces where you will mount components.

    10

Reassemble the engine components. Use the reverse order in which you took the components off.

    11

Use a torque wrench to tighten the cassette-to-cam cover bolts to 84 inch pounds (9.5 Nm). For the engine cover/acoustic cover fasteners, tighten to 27 inch pounds(3 Nm).
