How to Overhaul a Rotor Button on a Car

Completing a tune-up or overhaul on your vehicle includes the process of checking the rotor button, also known as the distributor rotor. Your vehicle may or may not have a distributor rotor, but if it does, follow the steps outlined here to overhaul a rotor button.

Access the distributor rotor by first removing the distributor cap. The exact instructions will vary by make and model of your vehicle, but the basics are going to be the same. Locate the mounting screws on the distributor cap, remove the lower screw and slide the cap off.

Remove the distributor rotor and perform the necessary work. This should include checking all parts associated with the distributor for excessive corrosion or cracking. If you find any, you will want to replace these parts. You may also consider soaking the nuts or bolts in penetrating oil to disengage some of the corrosion for better functioning and ability to assess for damage.

Slide the distributor rotor back into place the way it came out. Don't worry about installing it incorrectly; there is only one way for it to fit. Check that it is securely in place and look to see if any of the distributor cap wires have come loose or have come off.

Pop any loose or detached distributor cap wires into place on the distributor cap. Tighten the mounting screw to hold it back in place to complete the process of maintaining the distributor rotor and cap assembly.
