The fuel filter in your Chevrolet Camaro screens out dirt and rust particles from the fuel. Some mechanics recommend you replace the fuel filter every 30,000 to 40,000 miles. Follow the instructions below to replace the filter on a Chevrolet Camaro made up through 2002, which is when Chevrolet began a 7-year hiatus from manufacturing the Camaro.
Instructions
- 1
Disconnect the negative battery cable and locate the fuel filter, which is mounted directly in front of your Camaro's rear axle. The filter is on the fuel pipe line before the fuel injection system. Carefully loosen the fuel filter cap to relieve the tank pressure.
2Ensure the fittings on both ends of the fuel filter are clean. Slide the dust covers off of the quick-connect fittings. Twist the female connector a quarter turn in each direction as you hold both sides of the fitting. This will loosen any dirt. Put on safety glasses and blow any dirt or debris out of the fitting with compressed air.
3Use the quick release tool if your Camaro has metal fittings. Insert the tool into the female connector and push inward until you release the locking tabs. Then you can pull the connector apart. If your Camaro has a plastic fitting, you just need to squeeze the plastic retainer release tabs as you pull the connection apart.
4Clean male pipe ends with a rag. Take the threaded outlet fitting out of the chassis fuel pipe and slide the fuel filter out of the bracket. Replace the fuel pipe O-ring if there are any cuts, nicks or distortion.
5Put the new fuel filter into the bracket. Tighten the outlet fitting to the chassis fuel pipe up to to 22 foot-pounds. Place a few drops of clean engine oil on the male pipe end. Push both sides of the fitting together until the retainer tabs snap into place. Check to make sure the fitting is secure.
6Replace the dust cover over the quick-connect fitting and tighten the cap on the fuel filter. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Turn on the ignition switch for 2 seconds. Turn it off and wait for 10 seconds. Turn it to the on position again and check for fuel leaks. Your Chevrolet Camaro should be ready for another 30,000 miles of driving.
