Rocker panels are visible on the outside of all cars bodies. They are easy to find once you know where they are, but the term "rocker panel" has an obscure origin.
Identification
Rocker panels are the parts located under a car's doors and between the tire wheels. Each car has two, and they are usually painted the same color as the rest of the car.
Function
Traditionally, rocker panels were used to protect the undercarriage of a car from rocks, mud and other road debris.
Misconceptions
Rocker panels do not have anything to do with the rocker arms used in the automotive engine.
Prevention/Solution
You can add splash guards behind each wheel to prevent rocker panel damage from road debris kicked up by the tires.
Fun Fact
First used on race cars, car manufacturers now modify rocker panels by adding aerodynamic effects and side skirts to the panels on some cars.
