The Toyota Highlander mixes fuel and air under pressure with a fuel injector. Carburetors previously performed this function passively but were rendered obsolete by fuel injectors in the late 1980s. A fuel injector's programmable firmware allows it to handle different fuels. A fuel injector is comprised of only the nozzle and valve; it still requires the pump to pressurize the fuel.

Instructions

    1

Determine which fuel injector your Toyota Highlander will need. This depends not only on the make and model, but also the engine size. Models made before 2008 may have a 2.4L, 3.0L or 3.3L engine. The current version has a 3.5L 2GR-FE engine.

    2

Relieve the fuel system pressure and disconnect the air cleaner and hoses with a socket wrench. Detach the fuel line from the fuel rail and unplug the electrical connectors for the fuel injectors so you and position the wiring harness for the fuel injectors aside.

    3

Remove the fuel rail with the fuel injectors still attached using a socket wrench. Separate the fuel injectors from the fuel rail and remove the O-rings.

    4

Install the new fuel injectors by reversing the removal procedure. Coat the new o-rings with clean fuel and ensure that each injector rotates smoothly in the fuel rail. Use a torque wrench to tighten the bolts to 15 foot pounds.

    5

Turn the ignition on for two seconds to pressurize the fuel system and then off for 10 seconds. Start the engine to check for fuel leaks.
