Your Mitsubishi Eclipse has an electrically operated engine cooling fan. A novice can replace a Mitsubishi Eclipse engine fan, using little more than a wrench and a screwdriver, in less than an hour. These steps do not require you to work underneath the vehicle.

Instructions

    1

Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. Electric cooling fans may switch on without notice, even if your vehicle's ignition is off, so this step is crucial to ensure you safety as you're working on your Mitsubishi Eclipse engine cooling fan. You may also wish to remove the coolant recovery (overflow) reservoir to give yourself a little more working room.

    2

Unplug the engine cooling fan's electrical connector. If your vehicle has an automatic transmission, you will also need to disconnect and plug the transmission oil cooler lines.

    3

Loosen and remove the obvious mounting bolts in the corners of the fan shroud (casing) and remove the entire fan assembly from your vehicle.

    4

Take the fan assembly apart as necessary to replace individual components by removing the fan blade retainer nut from the fan motor shaft and removing the motor-to-shroud attaching screws. Reassemble with new parts, or you can just provide an entirely new assembly.

    5

Place the new or repaired fan assembly in the engine compartment and securely bolt it in place on the radiator, using the original mounting bolts and brackets.

    6

Plug the electric fan back in and, if your vehicle has an automatic transmission, remove the plugs from the transmission oil cooler lines and reconnect them. If you removed the coolant recovery reservoir to give yourself extra working space, replace it now.

    7

Reconnect the negative battery cable and run your vehicle up to normal operating temperature, checking for coolant leaks and to ensure the fan is working properly.
