If you own a Chevy Silverado and you have traced an ignition system problem to the distributor, you can replace the distributor with a few basic tools. The Silverado has several engine sizes, and it also has distributor and distributorless systems in the vehicles from 1999 to 2005. Be sure yours has a distributor rather than an electronic ignition. Here's how to replace the distributor.

Instructions

    1

Take off the plastic cover on top of the engine block with a wrench and trace the spark plug wires to the distributor. You'll find it at the back of the engine block.

    2

Unhook the negative cable from the battery at the side of the engine compartment; carefully pull the spark plug wires off the distributor cap. Unscrew the screws from the coil leads from the distributor and the electrical connector at the bottom of the distributor, using a screwdriver.

    3

Loosen the clamps and take off the distributor cap. Mark the parts with a marker to align the rotor position to the distributor housing and the housing to the engine block during distributor installation.

    4

Unbolt the distributor hold-down bolt with a wrench and remove the distributor from the engine.

    5

Install the new Silverado distributor, aligning the marks for proper seating in the engine block. When ordering the distributor, give the parts dealer your model, year and engine size. You can order part number 22176E from Parts Train for a 4.3L engine.

    6

Bolt the distributor hold-down bolt and replace the clamp on the distributor cap. Connect the electrical connector at the base of the distributor, the spark plug wires and coil leads, and the negative battery cable.
