The oil pump lubricates the engine by keeping the oil circulating. Without this lubrication, the engine wouldn't run. An oil pump is usually located in the oil pan. You can change the pump on your own, provided you can safely raise the car.

Instructions

Remove Old Oil Pump

    Drive your Hyundai Santa Fe up onto ramps or lifts. You can use a jack, but brace the front wheels so they don't roll. Set the emergency break so the car doesn't roll.

    Drain the engine oil and remove the negative battery cable. Take out the timing belt and the oil pan. Remove the oil screen, the gasket, the oil pressure switch, the oil filter bracket and gasket.

    Take out the plug cap from the oil pump part of the case with Tool 09213-33000. Insert a 0.32 inch screwdriver into the plug hole while plugging the left side of the engine block. The screwdriver needs to go in at least 2.4 inches.

    Pull out the pump driven gear, the left counter balance shaft bolt and the front case bolts. Note the lengths and locations of the bolt. Remove the case and gasket and the two counter balance shafts from the block.

    Separate the oil pump cover and gears from the case. Remove the screwdriver from the plug hole and remove the pump driven gear and the left counter balance shaft bolt. Take the oil pump cover from the case.

Install New Oil Pump

    Put in the oil pump gears and check the tip clearance for the gears with a feeler gauge. Use the following specifications: the standard value drive gear should be 0.0063 to 0.0083 inches; the standard value driven gear should be 0.0071 to 0.0083 inches; the limit drive gear should be 0.0098 inches; and the limit driven gear should be 0.0098 inches.

    Measure the side clearance of the gears with a feeler gauge. They should measure according to the following specifications: the standard value drive gear should be 0.0031 to 0.0055 inches; the standard value driven gear should be 0.0024 to 0.0047 inches; the limit drive gear should be 0.0098 inches; and the limit driven gear should be 0.0098 inches.

    Align the gear timing marks after applying fresh engine oil to both gears. Insert the oil pump case and install the oil seal into the case. Place Tool 09214-32100 on the front of the crankshaft, and then apply oil to the outside of the tool to help with the installation of the case.

    Install a new front case gasket and tighten the flange bolts to 14 to 20 ft-lb. Put a 0.32 inch screwdriver into the plug hole at least 2.4 inch in. Make sure the shaft is in place and install the bolt.

    Insert an O-ring on the groove on the front case. Add the plug case and tighten to 14 to 20 ft-lb. Install the oil screen and gasket. Put in the oil pan and oil pressure switch with a 24-mm deep socket for that. Apply liquid gasket sealant on the threads before you install and tighten to 6 to 9 ft-lb. Put the timing belt back in.

    Fill the crankcase to the correct level. Start your Hyundai Santa Fe engine and check for leaks.
