Side view mirrors are susceptible to damage, particularly if you drive too close to objects or other vehicles. If the side view mirror on your 2000 Chevy Malibu is damaged, or if its electric motor is burnt out, you can replace it yourself in about 20 minutes. If the Malibu has power mirrors, be sure to use a factory replacement mirror. This ensures compatibility with the electrical harness for the power mirror.

Instructions

    1

Roll down the window on the side you want to replace the side view mirror on. Disconnect the negative battery cable using a wrench, if your Malibu has power mirrors. If it doesn't, it's not necessary to disconnect the negative battery cable.

    2

Insert a trim panel removal tool or a flathead screwdriver into the upper corner of the side mirror panel on the interior door trim. This panel is shaped like a triangle. Pry outward to release the panel's clips, and then pull the panel off. Behind it, you'll see a foam absorber. Pull it off. Now you'll see three large nuts and a wiring harness. If your Malibu doesn't have power mirrors, you won't see the wiring harness.

    3

Unplug the wiring harness, if equipped. Insert your hand through the open window and grasp the exterior part of the side view mirror. Hold it firmly. With your other hand, remove the three nuts with a socket wrench.

    4

Pull the side view mirror away from the Malibu. Attach the new mirror. Hold it in place with one hand while you tighten the nuts with the other.

    5

Plug in the wiring harness for the power mirror switch, if necessary. Place the absorber back in its place. Place the panel back into position and push it firmly against the frame to snap it back on.
