How to Replace the Fan in a Mitsubishi Galant

Your Mitsubishi Galant has an electrically operated engine cooling fan. Replacing the engine fan in a Mitsubishi Galant is slightly more complicated than in other vehicles because you must drain the coolant system, but a novice can still accomplish these steps in under 2 hours with just a wrench, a screwdriver, a coolant reservoir and some marking tape.

Disconnect the negative battery cable on your Mitsubishi Galant. Loosen the radiator drain plug and drain the engine coolant into a clean container that can be covered to protect it from debris.

Loosen the clamps and remove the upper radiator hose, along with the overflow hose. Mark the exact orientation and location of each clamp before removing it. If your vehicle has an automatic transmission you will also need to remove and plug the oil cooler hoses.

Unplug all electrical connectors from the engine cooling fan motor. Remove the fan shroud mounting bolts, then lift the fan and shroud out of the engine compartment.

Place a new fan assembly in the engine compartment, or remove the fan blade retainer nut to separate the fan from the motor and then remove mounting screws from the motor and take the motor out of the shroud. Then reassemble the fan components using new parts.

Bolt the new fan assembly into place in the engine compartment and reconnect all its electrical connectors.

Replace the oil cooling hoses (if they were removed), the upper radiator hose and the overflow hose. Make sure to match the marks on the hoses and clamps precisely when you reinstall the hose clamps.

Refill your radiator and engine cooling system with coolant and reconnect the negative battery lead. Run your vehicle, and then check for coolant leaks and to make sure that the fan is operating properly.
