The Mitsubishi Galant incorporates a distributor ignition system and a distributorless ignition system (DIS), depending on the type of engine in the car. With a distributor ignition system, the ignition coil works as an integral part of the distributor. Mitsubishi uses the distributor ignition system in cars with 1.5L, 1.8L, 2.4L and 3.5L and 2.0L SOHC and 3.0L SOHC engines.

Instructions

    1

Consider Mitsubishi's recommendations. The company encourages you to replace the entire distributor rather than just the ignition coil.

    2

Disconnect the ground cable, which connects to the negative battery terminal, from the battery. Isolate the cable to prevent accidental contact, which can cause sparks, engine fires or electrocution.

    3

Access the Galant ignition coil through the distributor. You may need to remove the cap, seal and rotor to do so. Make notes as you work. You need to put everything back after you install the new ignition coil.

    4

Grip the boot of the ignition coil wire and release it from the ignition coil. Don't pull on the wire or you may damage it.

    5

Use a wrench or a socket set to unfasten the bolts that secure the distributor to the engine. You may need to remove the old Galant ignition coil from the mounting system.

    6

Set the new ignition coil in the distributor. Reassemble the parts that you removed.
