How to Replace a Fuel Filter in a Chevy Cobalt

The symptoms of a bad fuel filter include a loss in horse power, very sluggish acceleration and, in some cases, difficulty starting. Replacing the fuel filter is always the best policy because you can't reliably unclog a filter. The Chevrolet Cobalt uses a paper fuel filter to prevent damage of the fuel injection system. There is no recommended interval for servicing the filter.

Locate the fuel filter. In the Cobalt, the fuel filter is between the feed pipe and the fuel injectors. Before removal of the filter, relieve the pressure in the fuel system by pulling the fuel pump fuse, and allowing the vehicle to run until it stalls due to lack of fuel. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

Look along the fuel line from the fuel tank to the fuel injectors until you find the filter. Chances are very likely that the mounting clip is under the car just before the front passenger side wheel well. You will need to lift the car up to access it. Block the rear of the back wheels and raise the jack.

Remove the filter from the clip holder and carefully clamp off the two fuel feed hoses. Replace the filter, inspect the hose ends and lines leading to and away from the filter for defects or signs of wear, then reattach the fittings to the inlet and outlet of the new filter. Tighten the fittings and replace it in the clip.

Reconnect the negative battery cable and check thoroughly for fuel leaks. Now start the ignition. To fill the filter and get gas to the ignition, you may have to let the starter crank a few seconds. The vehicle should start after this.
