The anti-lock braking system (ABS) controller for the Dodge Ram reduces the braking force to any wheel that is rotating significantly more slowly than the others. This helps prevent the brakes from locking during an emergency stop. Your vehicle is not necessarily unsafe to drive if the ABS warning light comes on, but it may mean that you need to replace the ABS.
Instructions
- 1
Determine which ABS controller your Dodge Ram will need. You'll want to be sure the new controller is compatible with your make and model of Ram. ABS has been standard equipment on the rear wheels or all four wheels for four-wheel drive Ram trucks since 1989.
2Remove the left turn signal housing and the extension panel under it. Disconnect the horn connector and remove the access cover. Remove the mounting screws for the washer reservoir with a socket wrench.
3Pull up the reservoir so you can disconnect the connector the pump motor and the pump hose. This will allow you to remove the reservoir from the vehicle.
4Disconnect both battery cables with a socket wrench so you can remove the battery and power distribution center. Push the locks for the harness connectors for the ABS controller and detach the connectors.
5Detach the brake lines from the hydraulic control unit, remove the front mounting bolt through the access opening and the rear mounting bolt through the engine compartment. Remove the hydraulic control unit assembly from the vehicle.
6Install the new ABS controller by reversing the removal procedure. Tighten the mounting bolts to 11 feet lbs. with a torque wrench and torque the brake lines fittings to 115 inch lbs.
7Bleed the brake system and program the new ABS controller with information on rear axle type and tire revolutions per mile.
