How to Recharge Air Conditioning with Freon in a Plymouth Voyager

If your Plymouth Voyager is blowing hot air when the air conditioner is turned on, the system may need to be recharged. In models made in 1995 or after, you can simply add R134 refrigerant to the system to recharge it. If your van was made prior to 1995, you will have to retrofit it to accept R134 refrigerant. In some areas, where you need a license to buy refrigerant, you will have to go to mechanic to have the system recharged.

Look at the air conditioning system on your Plymouth Voyager. You should check for damage or leaks. As you do this, keep an eye open for the Low Pressure Side port. This is located near the firewall on the passenger side of the van facing straight up. It has a blue cap on it. Remove this cap.

Turn on the van and start the air conditioner. Turn it on the highest fan speed and the lowest temperature. Use an automotive air conditioning pressure gauge to check the pressure. If the pressure is below 25 psi, you need to add more refrigerant. If it is above 25 psi, lack of pressure isn't the problem and you should have a professional check it out.

Read and follow the directions included in the kit so you can properly hook up the refrigerant refill kit to the Low Pressure Side port. The way you do this will vary depending on the type of kit and the manufacturer.

Add refrigerant until the pressure is between 25 and 45 psi. Pressure any higher than 45 psi can cause an explosion that leads to serious injury or even death so it is important to check the pressure often when you are recharging the system.

Detach the refill kit from the port following the directions of the kit. Put the cap back on the port. Failure to do this can cause refrigerant to leak out slowly.

Let the air conditioner run for 20 minutes so the R134 can evenly distribute through the entire system. This is especially important if you are using a kit that has the oil mixed in with the refrigerant.
