Ford F-Series trucks have a number of different relays for the various models and model years. For example, the 2006 Ford F-150's adaptive learning computer relies on relays, fuses and switches to control high amounts of current that flow through the electrical system. If your hi-beam headlamps malfunction, then you may have a damaged or broken hi-beam headlamps relay, which you can replace yourself.

Instructions

    1

Disconnect the battery, as high current discharge in your Ford F-150 during repairs can cause burns or wiring damage. Open the passenger side trim panel to expose the passenger compartment fuse panel/power distribution box.

    2

Remove the fuse/relay box cover by placing the "PULL" tab between your finger and thumb and pulling the cover up and off of the housing.

    3

Unplug your high-beam headlamps relay from its location--the first of six large relays grouped together at one end of the box (designated as the Relay R03 block on your Ford F-150 box diagram). If you're uncertain as to their location or if replacement is for other models or years, confirm the location using one of the owner manual .pdf files found at Ford Fleet (see Resources).

    4

Replace the relay by firmly plugging it into its socket. Keep in mind that the relay must fit tightly into the socket, as running a loose relay can potentially melt the relay's outer casing, fuse/relay box cover and trim panel. Put the box cover back on when finished by firmly clicking it into place and close the trim panel.

    5

Reconnect your battery and reset your Ford F-150's adaptive learning computer by setting the parking brake, moving the gearshift to park, turning off all accessories, idling your engine for at least 1 minute, turning on your air conditioning and continuing to allow the engine to idle for a few more minutes afterward.

    6

Test your hi-beam headlights. If they work, continue with your computer reset by driving your Ford F-150 at least 10 miles (to help the adaptive transmission to relearn) and reset the clock and radio presets.
