How to Replace a Fuel Pump in a Dodge Ram

The Dodge Ram fuel pump is electric so you should check its fuses and relays and before inspecting the fuel pump. If your vehicle still has difficulty getting fuel and your tank has fuel, you may need to clean or replace the fuel pump. The Dodge Ram comes in a variety of styles and this can affect your choice of fuel pump.

Select the new fuel pump for your Dodge Ram. You will not only need to know the make and model, but also the engine size. Models made before 1994 will have a 225 cubic inch (ci), 239 ci, 318 ci or 360 ci gasoline-powered engine or a 5.9 L diesel engine. Models made from 1994 to 2001 will have a 3.9 L, 5.2 L, 5.9 L (gasoline or diesel) or 8.0 L engine.

Look at engines for recent models of the Dodge Ram. Models made after 2001 may be equipped with a 3.7 L, 4.7 L, 5.7 L Hemi V8, 5.9 L Magnum V8, 5.9 L Cummins diesel, 6.7 L Cummins diesel, 8.0 L Magnum or 8.3 L Viper engine.

Prepare your vehicle for fuel pump servicing. Relieve the fuel system pressure and disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench. Drain and disconnect the fuel tank.

Remove the fuel pump's electrical connector and disconnect the fuel line from the fuel tank. You may now remove the fuel tank. Remove the locknut for the fuel pump with tool 6856 by turning it counterclockwise and disconnect the fuel pump. Discard the old O-ring.

Install the new fuel pump using the items included in the kit, especially the O-ring. Ensure that the alignment tab under the fuel pump sits in the notch on the fuel tank. Tighten the locking ring to 40 in. lbs. with tool 6856.

Complete the installation by reversing the removal procedure.
