How to Troubleshoot the Fuel System in a Dodge Caravan

The Dodge Caravan is now out of production but a great many of them are still on the road. The 2.2L and 2.6L engines has a mechanical fuel pump that is positioned on the side of the engine. Known for its reliability, the Caravan fuel system had few problems. Still though, the vehicle, like any other, may not start. You can easily troubleshoot the system for common problems.

Check the fuel level and review the starting procedures. If the engine won't turn over from a cold start, make sure the engine isn't flooded, the fuel filter clogged or the choke defective.

Suspect a defective choke when the engine won't start when hot. Make sure there's sufficient fuel. Check the choke plate.

Look for dirt or moisture in the fuel when the engine runs rough. Make sure the fuel pump is working properly. Check the air filter for clogs.

Blame poor gas mileage on a dirty carburetor or clogged air filter. Clean the carburetor and replace the air filter first. Suspect a defective choke when the problem continues.

Adjust the choke of the carburetor when the engine won't start and the smell of gasoline is present. Lift the hood and check the carburetor. Wait 15 minutes before another attempt to start the engine. Turn on the ignition without pumping the gas pedal.
