How to Replace the Oil Pan Gasket in a Chrysler Sebring

If you notice an unsightly puddle of oil under the engine of your Chrysler Sebring, it may be time to change the oil pan gasket. It's a challenge to change the oil pan gasket in Sebring models with larger motors, but if your Sebring has a 2.0-L engine, you may want to give the job a try. Here's how to change the oil pan gasket in a 2001 and later model Chrysler Sebring with a 2.0-L engine.

Park the Chrysler Sebring on a level surface, and block the rear wheels securely. Jack up the front end of the car onto jack stands. Remove the negative battery cable.

Crawl under the vehicle and locate the drain plug on the underside of the oil pan. Slide a bucket under the drain pan. Use a socket wrench to loosen the oil pan plug, then remove it with your fingers so it won't drop into the bucket. Allow the oil to drain into the bucket.

Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the transaxle bending bracket, the front engine mount and bracket, and take the structural cover off the oil pan. Remove the transaxle inspection cover. Take off the oil filter, and if your Sebring has an air conditioner, remove the oil filter adapter.

Remove the bolts holding the oil pan in place, and carefully remove the oil pan. Scrape off the old gasket with a putty knife or a similar tool, being careful not to scratch the joining surface. Clean the joining surface with solvent, and wipe out the inside of the oil pan.

Apply a 1/8 inch bead of adhesive gasket sealant to the oil pump-to-engine block line. Attach the new gasket and put the bolts back on. Torque them to 105 inch pounds Install a new oil filter, and reattach the adapter, if you removed it.

Reattach the dust cover on the transaxle, the oil pan structural cover, front engine mount and bracket, transaxle bending bracket. Replace the oil pan plug and torque it to 25 foot pounds Reattach the negative battery cable.

Remove the car from the jack stand. Fill the engine with fresh oil and check the level with a dipstick. Chrysler Sebring models require about 4.5 quarts of oil. Pour the old oil in an empty milk carton and take it to a garage or hazardous waste disposal for proper disposal.
