How to Use the Dupont Paint System

Automotive paint-mixing systems are used in professional body shops so that refinishing personnel always have essential materials on hand without having to order them from an external supplier. DuPont is widely recognized as one of the leading automotive paint companies in the world, and their mixing systems contain a comprehensive range of products for general body-shop use including primers, colors, clear coats and sealers. However, DuPont products are also available to those who repair and refinish cars as part of a hobby or home project. An understanding of the system will help you achieve the perfect auto-paint finish.

Instructions

    1

Take time to familiarize yourself with all of the products provided with the DuPont paint-mixing system. Identify individual tins by color and the reference numbers on the front so that you can clearly recognize the differences between base products, hardeners, thinners and ancillaries. ChromaPremier products, for example, are always supplied in sliver-and-white cans with red lids. Their product numbers always end with an "S" for clearer identification.

    2

Learn about the properties of each individual element of the DuPont paint-mixing scheme. All base products, including primers, paint colors and clear coats, are supplied with an extensive number of technical data sheets that explain how they should be used. Learn how all base products are mixed, the optimum conditions for using them and their drying times.

    3

Set up the DuPont paint system using the racking provided. Assembly instructions are usually supplied, although in most cases, a DuPont technical representative will build these for you. Add identification stickers on each available section of racking space, as this will make restocking used items much easier. Racking must be set up in a sealed paint mixing room so that combustible products can be contained in the event of fire or spillages.

    4

Organize training sessions for body-shop staff under the guidance of a DuPont technical representative to reinforce product information. Familiarity is the key to effective paint-system use and management, and each product should be demonstrated individually. Ensure each member of the staff undergoes individual and group session, as this will lead to increased product knowledge, faster turnaround times and less rework.

    5

Review product usage over the initial three-month installation period to see which materials are most widely used. Many body shops will only require a limited amount of materials based on the type of work being carried out. Return or exchange unused stock for fast-moving products to reduce holding levels and to eliminate the potential for waste if slow-moving products exceed their shelf lives.
