Mitsubishi uses two types of ignition systems in their Eclipse. In a distributor ignition (DI) system, the distributor contains the Eclipse ignition coil. The other type of system, a distributorless ignition system (DIS), doesn't use a distributor to contain the ignition coil.

Instructions

    1

Determine which type of engine you have. On 2.0L SOHC and 3.0L SOHC engines, you can replace just the Eclipse ignition coil. Otherwise, replace the distributor.

    2

Detach the ground cable, or the negative cable, from the battery terminal. This prevents sparks which can cause engine fires or electrocution.

    3

Grip the boot of the ignition coil wire and pull to separate the wire from the Eclipse ignition coil. If you pull on the wire, you may damage it.

    4

Disconnect the electrical connectors at the point where they attach to the ignition coil.

    5

Use a screwdriver to remove the screws that hold the ignition coil in place. Gently pull out the damaged ignition coil and replace it with the new Eclipse ignition coil. You can use a universal or stock ignition coil--just be sure the ignition coil fits your engine type.

    6

    Reassemble the components.
