The fuel filter in your Lincoln Navigator screens out dirt and rust particles from the fuel. Some mechanics recommend you replace the fuel filter every 30,000 to 40,000 miles to keep your vehicle in good running order. Follow the instructions below to replace a fuel filter in a Lincoln Navigator in under 45 minutes.

Instructions

    1

Detach the negative cable on the battery. Let the pressure out of the fuel system by disconnecting the electrical connector, starting the engine, and allowing it to idle until it stalls. After the engine stops, crank it for about 5 seconds and then turn the ignition off.

    2

Raise and support the vehicle. Disconnect the fuel lines from the fuel filter. Keep a drain pan handy in case any fuel spills out. Disconnect the fuel lines by removing the safety clip from the male hose, then pushing the fuel disconnect tool into the female fitting.

    3

Remove both the male and female fitting from the filter. Notice the direction of the fuel filter arrow so you put the new one in the same direction. Take the fuel filter out of the bracket and retainer, if applicable.

    4

Put the new fuel filter into the mounting bracket with the arrow pointing in the same direction the old filter pointed, which should be the direction the fuel flows through the system. Connect the fuel lines. Push the male tube into the female fitting until you hear a click. Check to ensure it's fully engaged. Install the safety clip.

    5

Lower the vehicle to the ground. Reconnect the cable on the battery. Restore the fuel system's pressure by turning the key to the "On" position. Start the engine of your Lincoln Navigator and check for leaks.
