The Nissan Maxima utilizes a distributorless ignition system (DIS), which relies on a total of six Maxima ignition coils to create combustion. The ignition coils do this by converting the low-voltage power from the battery into a high-voltage spark that triggers the spark plugs. If an ignition coil isn't working correctly, it reduces your engine's ability to perform correctly.
Instructions
- 1
Prevent injuries, like electrocution or accidents, including engine fires, by disconnecting the ground battery cable from the terminal. The ground connects to the terminal on the post with a (-) sign.
2Access the engine components by removing the engine cover, if there is one.
3Detach the air intake tubes and the air cleaner assembly. Then gently move the harness, its bracket and hoses to expose the Maxima ignition coil.
4Remove the wire harness connector from the ignition coil. You may also need to remove mounting retainers that secure the ignition coil in place. Typically, a small wrench or socket set provide the necessary grip to do this.
5Pull up and slightly twist the ignition coil to release it from the cylinder head.
6Install the new Maxima ignition coil. Make sure you get a good connection and a tight seal between the ignition coil boot and the cylinder head.
7Reattach and reposition the components you moved in order to access the ignition coil.
