How to Mix Automotive Paint in a Mixing Cup

Most automotive paint comes as a base coat that requires the addition of a hardener or a reducer mixed in a certain ratio, usually 1:1 or 4:1 depending on the application. The required ratio of paint to hardener or reducer can be found on the side of the paint can or on the technical data sheet supplied with the paint.

Read the mixing instructions on the side of the paint can carefully. Some paints require mixing the base coat with a reducer and a hardener while others only require a reducer. Take note of the ratios required when mixing the paint and hardener.

Locate the mixing chart printed on the side of the cup. The chart features columns of staggered numbers that serve as the fill marks according to the ratio at the top of the chart.

Determine how much paint you need and add it into the container accordingly. For example, if you pour the paint to the "1" mark in the first column of the 4:1 ratio section, locate the "1" mark in the second column and add enough reducer or hardener to bring the total amount of paint up to that mark.

Mix the contents thoroughly in the cup with the paint stirrer. Stir the paint for several minutes to ensure the reducer or hardener is mixed into the paint. When finished, remove the paint stirrer from the cup and pour the contents into the reservoir on the paint gun.
