The symptoms of a bad fuel filter include a loss in horse power, very sluggish acceleration and in some cases, difficulty starting. Replacing the fuel filter in the Corvette models without Feedback Fuel System is one of the more complicated systems. The fuel filter is part of a fuel filter/pressure regulator assembly. You will have to dismantle a number of items to get to the assembly.
Instructions
- 1
Relieve the pressure in the fuel lines of the car. To do this, pull the fuse to the fuel pump and allow the car to stall when it runs out of fuel. Disconnect the negative battery cable and jack the rear end of the car up. Place chock blocks in front of the front tires.
2Clean the filter connections with a rag and then press the locking tabs to detach the quick-connect fittings from the filter. Remove the rear stabilizer bar from the rear cradle. Lower the left muffler by removing the intermediate pipe-to-muffler bolts.
3Disconnect the fuel feed and return quick-connect fittings from the fuel filter. Release the fuel filter/pressure regulator assembly by removing the bracket mounting nut. Disconnect the fuel feed pipe from the outlet side of the assembly.
4Remove the fuel filter/pressure regulator assembly and bracket. Remove the fuel system ground strap. Finally disconnect the fuel filter/pressure regulator from the bracket.
5Clean all connections and inspect the fuel lines for any sign of deterioration.
6Reinstall the new filter by connecting the new plastic quick connector retainers on the inlet and outlet tubes. Replace the fuel filter/pressure regulator into the bracket. Install the fuel system ground strap. Attach the fuel feed pipe to the outlet side of the assembly.
7Attach the fuel filter/pressure regulator and bracket to the mounting stud and apply torque of 40 inch pounds. Attach the fuel return and feed quick connect fittings. Re-hang the muffler and torque the hanger nuts to 12 foot pounds and the intermediate pipe bolts to 37 foot pounds of torque.
8Install the stabilizer shaft and torque the nuts to 70 foot pounds. Connect the negative battery cable and prime the filter and fuel system by turning on the ignition for two seconds and then off for 10 seconds.
9Inspect the whole system for any fuel leaks. Lower the jack and remove the chocks from in front of the tires.
