The anti-lock braking system (ABS) on the Toyota Camry prevents the brakes from locking during an emergency stop. The ABS controller does this by reducing the braking force to any wheel that is rotating significantly more slowly than the others. The ABS warning light may mean you need to replace the ABS controller. However, a nonfunctioning ABS does not necessarily mean your vehicle is unsafe to drive.

Instructions

    1

Determine which ABS controller your Toyota Camry will need. You'll want to be sure the new controller is compatible with your make and model of Camry. ABS was first offered as an option in 1991 on the V6, LE and station wagon models.

    2

Turn the ignition off and disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench. Disconnect the electrical harness from the ABS controller and remove the cover for the ABS controller. Remove the five mounting screws for the ABS controller with a socket wrench.

    3

Detach the ABS controller from its mounting bracket and remove it from the vehicle.

    4

Install the new ABS controller by mounting onto its bracket. Use a torque wrench to tighten the five mounting screws to 28 inch lbs. Replace the computer cover and plug the electrical harness into the ABS controller. Connect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench.

    5

Test the new ABS controller. Turn the ignition switch on and ensure the ABS warning light comes on for about three seconds and then goes out. Turn the ignition switch off.
