How to Drop the Oil Pan in a GMC Sierra

The oil pan in a GMC Sierra is located in such a position that it can be damaged. Whenever it is broken open or there is a substance in the oil, drop the oil pan to replace or repair it. The most popular models of the Sierra are the 1500 Series, of which there are several engine sizes. The most common is the 4.3L engine.

Place the Sierra on a flat surface safe to work on. Use a jack and jack stands to raise the Sierra off the ground, or drive it onto ramps. Always follow specific directions provided by the manufacturer for using these items.

Drain the oil from the Sierra by placing an oil drip pan under the truck, using a wrench to unplug the oil plug and allow it to drain. The oil pan is located in the center of the engine, under the vehicle, between the tires while the oil drain plug is at the very back of the oil pan, pointing towards the rear of the vehicle.

Disconnect the negative battery cable. The battery is located under the hood of the car, towards the front, on the right hand side. Use a wrench to loosen the bolt holding the cable in place.

Remove the oil pan skid plate bolts and plate, the engine oil and filter, and the crossmember bolts and bar. Use a wrench to do so. Each of these is located under the vehicle, on or next to the oil pan.

Loosen the battery cable bracket bolts, the starter, the transmission cover, and then the positive battery cable clip bolt. Follow this with removing the oil level sensor electrical connector, then the transmission.

Stop and look at the oil level sensor, which is located next to the oil pan. Remove and discard (remember to replace with a new one when you reinstall).

Find the oil pan bolts, located around the edge of the oil pan. Loosen with a wrench and remove, keeping on hand on the bottom of the oil pan at all times to keep it from falling. Discard the gasket that will fall off with the oil pan.
