The Chevrolet Silverado has been popular since its introduction, but the 1988 to 1998 models have one major problem: Sagging door hinges. One of the steps in removing these doors is swapping out the door springs, which isn't as easy as it looks. Nonetheless, this job should take about 10 minutes with the right tools. This project vehicle is a 1995 Chevrolet Silverado, but the process is similar on other Chevrolet vehicles.
Instructions
- 1
Open the door of the truck and locate the door spring. It's located in the jam of the door, next to the hinges.
2Open up the GM spring tool using the Allen key. Open it up enough to get the lip of the tool around as much of the spring as possible.
3Place the spring tool around the spring in the door jam. Get as much of the spring into the jaws of the tool as possible.
4Tighten the spring tool down using the Allen key set. This is going to compress the spring, so tighten it as much as possible.
5Remove the spring and loosen the spring clamp using the Allen key. The spring can now be removed from the tool.
6Insert the replacement spring into the tool and compress it down using the Allen key.
7Place the spring with the spring tool into the door jam, and slowly loosen the spring tool using the Allen key. Make sure the spring is positioned in the same manner it was originally.
8Remove the spring clamp tool from the spring.
