The distributorless ignition system (DIS) in a Toyota Camry relies on the ignition coil to boost the battery's low-voltage power into high-voltage power that sparks the spark plugs. In a DIS, the Camry ignition coil mounts directly to the cylinder head.
Instructions
- 1
Disconnect your battery by removing the ground cable wire from the terminal. For additional safety, set your emergency brake.
2Use a wrench or a socket to loosen the two nuts and clips on the cylinder head cover. This exposes the Camry ignition coil.
3Remove the ignition coil connectors. You should find four of these.
4Pull up on the ignition coil to dislodge it from the cylinder head. You may want to twist slightly to help break the seal between the cylinder head and the ignition coil.
5Install the new Camry ignition coil. You can use a stock replacement or a universal ignition coil. Be sure the ignition coil works with your type of engine--there's a variety of universal ignition coils on the market.
6Tighten the connectors, nuts and clips in place.
7Reconnect the battery.
