As with any manufacturing process, car paint levels have certain specifications before they can be sold to the public. A certain thickness is needed for protection of the car's body from the elements and for aesthetics in regards to car sales.
Identification
Automobile paint, direct from a manufacturer, should have a range of thickness from 3.5 to 5.5 mils, or thousandths of an inch.
Considerations
If a vehicle has an undulating layer of paint over a particular portion of the vehicle, it may have had prior damage and new paint was placed over the area. In general, paint thickness should not deviate more than 2 mils along the entire car body.
Additional Information
One of the main reasons to keep a car's paint at the specific manufactured thickness is to avoid sun damage to the vehicle's exterior, bringing the resell value down considerably. Sun damage can add cracks and distort the car's color due to ultraviolet radiation.
